CONNECTION

Art Residency in Carrara

The residency took place in the inspiring studio of artist Marianna Blier, known for her masterful work in marble. The space, filled with the tools, materials, and atmosphere unique to Carrara’s rich tradition, fostered a profound connection to the origins of marble sculpting. Blier’s own dedication to combining spiritual and physical aspects of marble sculpture influenced the creative direction, adding depth and grounding to the "Connection" project. Working alongside Blier in her studio allowed for a mutual exchange of artistic perspectives, blending hands-on traditional techniques with innovative digital processes.

After immersive weeks in Carrara, Italy, the heart of global sculpture, the art residency has concluded, marked by an exploration of the relationship between tradition and digital innovation. The project titled "Connection," developed in Carrara marble, combined classical and digital sculpting techniques, creating a dialogue between the physical and the digital to explore profound themes related to human nature.

The Link between Humanity and the Universe

Inspired by the historical environment and Renaissance heritage of Carrara, "Connection" was structured around three fundamental points of the human body: mind, heart, and reproductive system. These elements symbolize the essential bond between humans and the surrounding world — nature, spirituality, and love. The mind represents the center of reason and creativity; the heart, the spiritual and emotional core; and the reproductive system, the primary creative energy, embodying the cycle of birth and regeneration.

Tradition and Virtual Reality

Throughout the residency, virtual reality was used to expand the traditional practice of sculpting. While working in marble, the digital process was mirrored in virtual reality, enhancing and extending the physical experience. This new type of interaction between material and digital provided an innovative perspective on contemporary sculpture, allowing for fresh forms of engagement with the artwork.

Carrara is internationally renowned as the birthplace of marble sculpture and served as an inspiration for Renaissance masters like Michelangelo, who revolutionized the art of sculpture. This residency represented a reconnection with the past of sculpture while integrating new technological approaches, much like the Renaissance masters combined science with art. This balance between the ancient and the contemporary is essential for MalanhoStudio and its mission to innovate in stone sculpture.

"Connection" and Contemporary Art

"Connection" goes beyond a physical piece; it is a reflection on the potential of contemporary sculpture, aiming to open doors to new forms of creation and interpretation by combining traditional techniques with emerging digital tools. This project not only reflects Diogo Malanho’s artistic vision but also defines MalanhoStudio’s goals in using technology to explore timeless human themes.
